Americans Erupt for Six, Beat Rio Grande Valley 6-1

The Allen Americans defeated the Rio Grande Killer Bees 6-1 tonight at the Allen Event Center, in front of the biggest crowd of the season, 4,936.

The Americans opened the scoring in the first when forward Brett Clouthier put one past Rio netminder Dan Dunn, his second of the season, assisted by Nick Layton and Joshua Hepditch at 3:28. The Americans added to their lead a little over eight minutes later, when Brett Clouthier found Nick Layton in front of the Rio net, Layton's seventh of the season, Brett Cloutier and Colton Yellow Horn with the assist. The Americans with a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Rio Grande Valley outshot the Americans 9-8 after the first.

Dylan King and Jim McKenzie added goals in the second for the Americans. King's third of the year, and second against Rio Grande Valley this season. McKenzie with his 8th of the year and first of two on the night. Rio Grande Valley netminder Dan Dunn was pulled in the second period, just seven minutes in after giving up his 4th of the night. John Murray came on in relief of Dunn.

The Killer Bees broke the shutout in the third, when Bees forward David Marshall scored on a breakaway after he stole the puck at the Allen blueline, to make the score 4-1 halfway through the third. The Americans would add two more, as Jarret Lukin ripped one past John Murray from the left face-off circle, after a beautiful pass from Jason Deitsch. Jim McKenzie collected his second of the evening with a quick blast from along the right wing boards that snuck in past John Murray, to make it 6-1 Allen. The Americans remain in a tie for first place in the Berry Conference with Wichita, after the Thunders 4-3 OT win over the Brahmas earlier today.

The Americans return to home ice and face the Killer Bees on Friday, December 23rd at 7:05.
