July 3, 2010 - Texas League (TL1)
Arkansas Travelers News Release
MIDLAND, TEXAS - The Travs sagging offense received a boost Saturday afternoon as infielder Alexi Amarista was added to the roster. The Angels 2009 Minor League Player of the Year joins his third club in four days during a whirlwind week. He played two games for the Salt Lake Bees after a promotion from Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday. Now Amarista joins the Travs as they wrap up a three-game series against the RockHounds with a 5 pm doubleheader at Citibank Ballpark. To make room for Amarista on their 24-man roster the Travelers sent infielder Michael Demperio to the Tempe Angels.
Amarista, 21, played second base for Salt Lake Thursday and Friday going 4-for-8 at the plate with two doubles and a triple. He left the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes after batting .303/.349/.448 in 72 games adding four home runs and 39 runs batted in. Voted the top second baseman in the California League during the 2010 first half, he collected 29 extra-base hits while stealing 17 bases at single-A. Known as a stellar glove man Amarista committed just one error while playing 68 games in the field.
His 2010 production mirrors that of his outstanding 2009 season at Cedar Rapids when Amarista led the Midwest League with a .319 batting average and ten triples while finishing second with 39 doubles.
Amarista is from Barcelano, Venezuela, and in his fourth season after signing with the Angels as a free agent January 2007. He holds a .322 career average in 316 minor league games.
Demperio, 22, played in five games for the Travs since a June 22 promotion. He went 4-for-16 at the plate adding one run batted in.
