Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
TULSA, OK. - Former major leaguer Greg Reynolds proffered a quality start and four Drillers provided two-out, RBI hits as Tulsa rallied for a 6-3 win over the Hooks Friday night before a sellout crowd of 8,242 at ONEOK Field.
The result is a record-setting ninth consecutive defeat for the Hooks, who fall to 0-8 in the second half and 36-42 overall.
Chances for a halt to the skid looked bright in the third. Jose Vallejo, making his first start for the Hooks, singled to left with two outs, moving pitcher Jeremy Johnson, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to second. Jon Gaston followed with a triple to the gap in left-center to give the Hooks a 2-0 lead.
Jhon Florentino, fresh off a two-homer effort Thursday night, singled to left, plating Gaston for a 3-0 score. Florentino extended his hitting streak to eight games with the knock.
The home team began its slow and steady rally in the fourth. Johnson, working on a one-hit shutout through three-and-two-thirds, issued his only walk of the night to Daniel Mayora. Wilin Rosario followed with a home run just over the wall in left to tighten the affair at 3-2.
Tulsa drew level in the sixth. Bronson Sardinha and Mayora opened the frame with back-to-back singles, but Johnson got Rosario to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play. One out from carrying a lead into the seventh, the Hooks were victimized by Kiel Roling, who doubled to left-center to bring in Sardinha from third to make it a 3-3 game.
The Drillers grabbed the lead for good in the seventh. With a runner at second and two outs, Jason Van Kooten doubled to left-center, sending Warren Schaeffer home with the go-ahead run. Left fielder David Cook dove to his left and nearly made a terrific inning-ending catch, but the ball eluded him.
Sardinha followed with a double into the right field corner, chasing Van Kooten home to give the Drillers a 5-3 edge.
Tulsa added an unearned run in the eighth when the Hooks committed two errors. The last of those errors came with a runner at third and two outs when Schaeffer hit a high pop-up in the infield. Florentino and shortstop Marcos Cabral bumped into one another near the mound as the ball hit in Florentino's glove and rolled out, allowing Mike Mitchell to score from third.
Reynolds (2-2) earned his second straight win by limiting the Hooks to three runs on six hits over a season-high seven innings. He did not issue a walk while striking out three. Stu Pomeranz got the final four outs for his sixth save.
Fernando Abad, who relieved Johnson with two outs in the sixth, suffered the loss. Abad (0-3) was charged with two earned runs on three hits during his one inning on the hill.
Lefty Douglas Arguello (7-3) attempts to stop the madness when the two clubs conclude this series Saturday night at 7:05. Fellow southpaw Brandon Durden (3-5) counters for the home team.
