Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 1/12/08 - The Amarillo Gorillas were beat by the Odessa Jackalopes 5-3 on Saturday night, the Gorillas third loss in a row, and fifth of the season to Odessa. Amarillo would battle back in the game, cutting a 4-0 deficit to 4-3 with 5:00 to play in regulation, but an empty-net goal late in regulation by Odessa's Olivier Proux would seal the Gorillas fate, giving them just one point in their three games on the weekend.
Odessa would take a 1-0 lead in the first, when Gorillas goalie Dan McWhinney turned the puck over and Brian Swiniarski would capitalize on the mistake, scoring at 7:09 of the first. In period two, three unanswered Jackalopes goals from Mike Rutter, Mario Joly and Mike MacDonald would swell the Odessa lead to 4-0. Mac Donald's goal, the eventual game winner, was scored on a penalty shot awarded by referee Joe Sullivan, who earlier in the contest awarded Amarillo's Keith Rowe a penalty shot as well. Before the period would end, the Gorillas would get on the scoreboard off a Shaun Arvai goal at 17:40 of the second, giving the Gorillas some life heading into the third down 4-1.
As the Gorillas have done all year, they would battle back in the third period, making a game of things off of goals from Bill Vandermeer and Grant Selinger that close the Odessa lead to just one with 5:00 left in regulation. Despite their best efforts however, the Amarillo comeback would fall short as Proux's empty-net goal solidified the Jackalopes victory.
Amarillo went 1-7 on the power-play, while Odessa went 1-10. The Gorillas outshot Odessa 46 to 26 as well.
The Gorillas will be back at home next weekend, hosting the Rocky Mountain Rage on Friday night, and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Saturday night. Shaun Arvai, David Nimmo and Nate Fornataro will be participating in the CHL all-star game this coming Wednesday, January 16th at the Broomfield Events Center.
