Second Period Too Much for the Rage
January 12, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Loveland, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles rode a dominant second period to a 6-5 win over the Rocky Mountain Rage at the Budweiser Events in both teams' final game before the Central Hockey League All-Star Break.
The teams traded one-sided periods through the first 40 minutes. Rocky Mountain took control in the first behind two goals from Daymen Rycroft and a single tally from Nathan Rosychuk to lead 3-1 after one.
The Eagles' effort in the middle period was even more one-sided, though, as they out-shot the Rage, 24-5. Their rally began with a short-handed goal off the stick of Riley Nelson and ended with just more than three minutes left in the second when Dave Iannazzo gave his club 4-3 advantage.
Rocky Mountain rallied to tie the game at 18:34 of the second on the power play as Rycroft scored his third goal of the evening and his league-leading 12th power play marker. But Colorado answered by scoring their own power play goal from Greg Pankewicz with just 21 seconds remaining to take a 5-4 lead to the third.
The Rage recovered in the final period and outplayed their hosts, outshooting the Eagles, 10-5. Scott Wray tied the game at five with a power play goal at 7:16 only to see Seth Leonard put Colorado in front to stay at 9:51.
Rycroft's three goals give him a league-high 26 tallies on the season, while Nelson also had a hat trick for the Eagles.
Rocky Mountain had won three straight against the defending President's Cup Champions and two in a row on Colorado's home ice but now drops to 3-1-1 in the season series.
Overall, the Rage hit the All-Star Break and reach the exact mid-point of their regular season schedule with the league's best record, 24-5-3, and a five-point lead over the Eagles atop the Northwest Division.
The entire league now turns its attention to Broomfield Event Center, which will host the 2008 CHL All-Star festivities on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 15 and 16. The All-Star Banquet, which is open to the public, will be held on the 15th. The banquet features the introduction of the two All-Star Teams plus a performance by Denver resident and 2005 Last Comic Standing winner Josh Blue. The All-Star Game will be played on the 16th, when the Northern and Southern Conferences will square-off in a battle for supremacy between the most talented players in the league.
