Lexington Legends News Release
Houston Astros' second baseman Jose Altuve is the fourth former Lexington Legend to be named to a Major League Baseball All-Star roster. Altuve was selected as a National League reserve for the 2012 All-Star game, which will be played in Kansas City July 10.
Altuve, 22, is hitting .308 with 18 doubles, five home runs and 23 runs batted in in 72 games for Houston. He currently leads all NL second basemen in batting average and hits. The 5-foot-5 Altuve has 30 multi-hit games this season, which ranks tied for fourth in the majors.
With the Legends in 2010, Altuve hit .308 with 11 home runs, 45 RBI and 39 stolen bases in 94 games, and played in the South Atlantic League All-Star game. He was promoted from Lexington to advanced-A Lancaster July 30, 2010. Altuve moved quickly through the Astros' system and was promoted to Houston on July 19, 2011. At that time, he was leading all of minor league baseball with a .389 average.
"Jose Altuve was a real fan favorite here in Lexington with good reason," said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat. "He is a very exciting player, and he was a great representative of the Legends off the field as well. We enjoyed having him with us, and we're really proud of his success at the major league level. From South Atlantic League All-Star to Major League All-Star in just two short years!"
Altuve joins Hunter Pence, (NL 2009, 2011), Ben Zobrist (AL 2009) and John Buck (AL 2010), as former Legends named to MLB All-Star teams.
