GREENSBORO, NC - The Hickory Crawdads hung on for the 7-6 win against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, before 3,971 fans at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro on Monday night . With the win, the 1st-Place 'Dads have guaranteed their third straight series victory to start the second half of the season, and are 6-2 on the current nine-game road trip.
With the Grasshoppers (5-7, 51-31) holding a 3-1 lead through the first four innings, the Crawdads (9-3, 45-36) swung in front in the top of the fifth against RHP Austin Brice (L, 5-3). Consecutive singles by SS Luis Sardinas and 2B Rougned Odor, followed by a walk from CF Chris Grayson, loaded the bases with no outs. LF Alejandro Selen dealt the final blow against Brice, driving an RBI single to bring the 'Dads within one, 3-2. Facing RHP Johnny Omahen, RF Trever Adams punched a two-run single to center field, followed by an RBI fielder's choice from DH Kellin Deglan, lifting Hickory to the 5-3 lead.
The Crawdads added two more runs in the top of the sixth against Omahen. 3B Nick Urbanus worked a walk to start the inning and moved to second on a bunt single by Odor one out later. After Grayson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Selen struck again with a two-run single up the middle, stretching the lead to 7-3.
However, Greensboro started chipping away right away in the bottom of the sixth against RHP Arlett Mavare (W, 3-3). A two-run home run by 2B Austin Barnes sliced the deficit in half, making it 7-5.
The Grasshoppers edged even closer in the bottom of the seventh against RHP Chance Sossamon. With one on and two down, DH Rand Smith launched an RBI double to center field, bringing the Grasshoppers within a run of tying it, 7-6.
