Altoona Curve News Release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - After beginning the day at .500, the Curve ended the day two games above .500 as they were able to take two games from the Binghamton Mets on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. Altoona scored late in the completion of the game from Friday night to take the game, 8-6, and hung on for a victory in the regularly scheduled game, 10-6.

The Curve resumed Friday night's game where it left off with Tony Sanchez at the plate and runners at the corners with one down in the seventh. Sanchez flew out and Miles Durham struck out to end the threat but the Curve would jump ahead in the eighth thanks to Shelby Ford.

With one down in the eighth, Ford clubbed his first home run of the 2011 season to right-center field off reliever Rhiner Cruz (0-1) and put Altoona in front, 7-6. The Curve added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Brad Chalk. Noah Krol closed down the first game for his 10th save of the season while the win went to Anthony Claggett (3-0), who pitched two scoreless innings.

Altoona jumped on starter Tobi Stoner (0-1) in the second inning of the second game when Jordy Mercer led off the inning with a double. After going to third on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt by Stoner, Mercer came home on a sac fly by Jeremy Farrell to give Altoona the lead at, 1-0. Eric Fryer and Durham then became the first duo this season to slug back-to-back home runs as they each hit solo shots following Farrell's sac fly. After two, Altoona led, 3-0.

In the fourth, Altoona added three more off the rehabbing right hander Stoner as seven men batted in the frame. Chalk, Jeff Locke (3-5) and Brock Holt each drove in a run in the inning to place the Curve out in front, 6-0.

Locke, who had worked four scoreless innings, ran into trouble in the fifth as Binghamton scored four times to pull within two. Jonathan Malo smacked a two-run double to get the B-Mets on the board before Josh Satin homered two batters later to bring them within two at 6-4. The fifth inning would be Locke's last and he gave up a total of four runs on four hits with eight strikeouts over his five innings of work.

The game remained a two-run game until the seventh when Binghamton scored off reliever Diego Moreno on a Satin sacrifice fly to cut the lead to, 6-5. Altoona answered with a run in the eighth on a Durham sac fly to go back out in front by two at 7-5.

Binghamton refused to go away as in the eighth they once again pulled within a run, this time scoring off reliever Michael Dubee on a one-out RBI single by Jordany Valdespin. Dubee escaped the jam in the eighth by inducing double-play ball off the bat of Raul Reyes and preserved the one-run lead.

Looking for more insurance in the ninth, Altoona plated three runs on a mammoth home run by Quincy Latimore to go up, 10-6. It was the third home run of the year for Latimore and his first since April 28th in Harrisburg.

Fryer continued his hot month of May and finished the game 3-for-4, ending the night a double shy of the cycle. Holt, Starling Marte and Latimore all had multi-hit games in the win for the Curve.

Altoona (25-23) will look to secure a series win over Binghamton (14-31) on Sunday night from NYSEG Stadium. RHP Jared Hughes (3-1, 3.26) will take to the mound for the Curve while RHP Brandon Moore (3-3, 4.69) throws for Binghamton. Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
