Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, Ohio - After falling, 6-1, in the first game on Thursday, Altoona was able to hang on and defeat the Aeros in the second game, 2-1, to salvage the final game of the series before returning to Curve, Pa. on Friday. Jared Hughes (3-1) turned in his third-straight solid outing as he earned the win in the second game while Michael Dubee notched his second save of 2011.
Altoona jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second when Shelby Ford connected for a two-out, RBI-single off starter Marty Popham (0-1) that brought home Jeremy Farrell from second. In the third, back-to-back doubles by Starling Marte and Quincy Latimore produced Altoona's second run of the game. Latimore finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Hughes completed 5.2 innings and did not allow a run while scattering four hits. The right-hander last allowed a run in the second inning of his start versus Erie on May 13th and has now held opponents off the scoreboard for 10.2 straight innings.
Akron made it interesting in the last of the seventh against Dubee, scoring a run and placing the tying run on third with two down. Dubee induced a groundout off the bat of Juan Diaz to end the game and secure the win.
In the first game, Altoona squandered a two-on, no-out situation and did not score in the first inning before Akron sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom half and plated five runs. Curve starter Aaron Thompson (2-4) lasted just two-thirds of an inning as he was chased in the first after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits. It was his shortest outing of the season.
Tim Alderson pitched the final 5.1 innings and retired 13 in a row before Karexon Sanchez homered in the last of the sixth to make it, 6-1, Aeros. It was the first home run of the season allowed by Alderson and the 5.1 innings pitched was also a season-best. Altoona scored its lone run of the game on a Brock Holt RBI triple in the fifth that brought home Miles Durham, who had walked earlier in the inning.
Holt finished the first game 3-for-3 and all told went 4-for-7 in the two games combined.
With the series in Akron now complete, both clubs will hop on the bus and head to Altoona to begin a four-game series that will take place over three days at Blair County Ballpark. Game one will take place on Friday night beginning at 6:30 p.m. with gates swinging open at 5:30 p.m.
The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Friday night will receive a New Logo Poster Giveaway featuring the Curve's new logo set. All kids can run the bases after Friday night's game as well.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6 p.m.
