Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Thursday announced an agreement with WXSP-TV to televise a variety of Griffins and AHL programming over the remainder of the 2002-03 season.
WXSP, in its third year as the Griffins' flagship television station, will commence its coverage with a live telecast of the 2003 AHL All-Star Game next Monday, Feb. 3 at 7:00 p.m. Griffins goaltender Marc Lamothe and center Mark Mowers will compete against each other as respective members of the Canadian AHL All-Stars and the PlanetUSA AHL All-Stars, at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.
The league's midseason classic will feature a distinct Michigan flavor.
Among those scheduled to play are former Griffin Jason Spezza (Binghamton - CAN), former Western Michigan defenseman Joe Corvo (Manchester - P-USA), and a quartet of former Michigan Wolverines: defenseman Mike Komisarek (Hamilton - P-USA), and forwards Jason Botterill (Rochester - CAN), Matt Herr (Providence - P-USA) and Andy Hilbert (Providence - P-USA). WXSP's package also includes live telecasts of two Griffins games in March.
Griffins broadcaster Bob Kaser and color man Larry Figurski will provide exclusive television commentary when Grand Rapids hosts the Rochester Americans on Saturday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. WXSP will also carry the feed from Fox Sports Southwest when the Griffins visit the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday, March 8 at 8:00 p.m. Rampage broadcasters Andrew Monaco and Brian Shantz will call the action.
As part of its coverage of the Griffins and the AHL, WXSP will also televise the league's new weekly magazine show, Inside the AHL. This half-hour program, featuring in-depth profiles of hockey's hottest prospects, will air primarily on Saturday afternoons at 2:00 p.m., concluding on June 7. Inside the AHL is produced by Pyman Productions in Toronto and carried by regional networks throughout the United States. Rookie Griffins defenseman Danny Groulx will be the featured prospect during an episode to be aired in mid-February.
