Scoring all their runs in their final four at-bats the Calgary Vipers (52-29) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (52-31) 8-2 before 3010 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Down 2-0 the Vipers bats came to life in the fifth inning with three runs followed by two in each of the sixth and seventh and one in the eighth frame. On the mound Mark Michael (8-2) tossed five innings while allowing one earned run and out of the bullpen Scott Watson, Dan Morari followed by Chris Bodishbaugh combined to toss four scoreless innings without walking anyone. With the win the Vipers need two wins in their last five regular season games to clinch the North Division pennant.
Edmonton opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning when Brent Metheny hit a home run, Carlos Duncan reached on a two-base throwing error, and Tom Collaro knocked in a run with a double for a 2-0 lead.
Calgary responded in the fifth frame as with two outs Louie Templeton singled, Derek Perren followed by Bryan Burke both reached on fielding errors to load the bases, Jonny Kaplan singled in two runs to tie the game, and Burke scored on a wild pitch for a 3-2 advantage.
The Vipers increased their lead in the sixth when Chad Ehrnsberger doubled on an eight-pitch at-bat, C.J. Ziegler doubled as well for a run batted in, Al Quintana advanced Ziegler to third base with a groundout to the right side, and Drew Miller collected a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 lead.
In the seventh inning Jeff Giacomini led off for Calgary with a walk, Kaplan doubled for a RBI, and Wilver Perez singled for a RBI along with a 7-2 advantage and to extend his on-base streak to 53 games.
For a fourth straight inning the Vipers scored in the eighth as Templeton was hit by a pitch, Derek Perren singled, Kaplan walked to load the bases, and Perez also walked for a RBI and a 8-2 lead.
The Vipers now head north to Edmonton to finish off the 2011 regular season against the Capitals starting with a 7:00 game on Thursday August 25th.
The 2011 North American League playoffs will start with Game 1 of the North Division Championship best of seven series in Edmonton at Telus Field against the Capitals on Tuesday August 30th at 7:00. Game 2 of the N.D.C.S. will also be in Edmonton on Wednesday August 31st at 7:00.
The series shifts to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday September 1st at 6:30 for Game 3 and on Friday September 2nd at 6:30 for Game 4. If necessary Game 5 will also be played in Calgary on Saturday September 3rd at 2:30.
If a Game 6 is necessary it will be back in Edmonton on Sunday September 4th at 2:00.
If a Game 7 is necessary it will take place on Tuesday September 6th at whichever team finishes the regular season in first place.
