Edmonton Capitals News Release
Calgary, AB - The Edmonton Capitals dropped an 8-2 decision to the Calgary Vipers on Wednesday to fall one game back of their provincial rivals in the North American League North Division standings with just five games left in the regular season.
The Caps and Vipers are already guaranteed to square off in the North Championship Series starting next Tuesday in Edmonton, but the regular season division title and home-field advantage in the playoffs are still up for grabs. The Vipers took the upper hand in the race for first with Wednesday's win at Foothills Stadium.
A solo home run by first baseman Brent Metheny and an RBI double by right fielder Tom Collaro accounted for the Caps' only two runs in the defeat, as Calgary used four pitchers to shut down Edmonton's usually-potent bats. Starting pitcher Rory Shortell's team-best record dropped to 11-4 with the loss, as he gave up five runs and eight hits in 5.2 innings, though only two runs were earned, as a result of Caps defensive errors.
As per usual, centre fielder Jonny Kaplan and shortstop Wilver Perez were the main thorns in the Caps' sides, as Kaplan went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Perez was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Despite only throwing 0.2 innings, relief pitcher Scott Watson was credited with the win, taking over for starter Mark Michael.
The Caps and Vipers head north to Edmonton on Thursday to start the final series of the regular season, with the division title and home-field advantage in the post-season on the line. Games are scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., as well as a double-header on Sunday starting at 2 p.m.
Thursday's series opener is the final Thirsty Thursday of the regular season, presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House, 100.3 The Bear and 104.9 Virgin Radio, featuring beer on sale for $3.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
