Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves came out on the wrong end of a pitchers duel on Tuesday night at Prince George's Stadium, dropping the series opener to the Bowie Baysox, 2-0.

The Baysox grabbed the lead in the last of the second inning against Erie starter Tyler Alexander. Alexander had retired the first five batters of the game before giving up an opposite-field, solo home run to Aderlin Rodriguez for a 1-0 Bowie lead.

Bowie would get one additional run in the seventh. Garabez Rosa, Austin Wynns and Rodriguez started the inning with three consecutive singles. Stevie Wilkerson connected on a sacrifice fly to center, plating Rosa for a 1-0 lead. A.J. Achter would enter and retire the final two batters of the inning, quelling the Bowie threat. Achter has now retired nine of 10 inherited baserunners this season.

The Baysox starter Brandon Barker was virtually unhittable on the night. Erie's line extra-base hit came in the second on a two-out Kody Eaves double. Barker worked eight scoreless innings, facing just one batter over the minimum.

The SeaWolves threatened in the ninth against Bowie reliever Jesus Liranzo . Ross Kivett led off with a walk and Harold Castro singled with one out, putting the tying run on base. Dominic Ficociello grounded out to first, advancing the runners to second and third. Liranzo struck out Mike Gerber to end the game.

Alexander (2-4) was the tough luck loser, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work. It was the deepest he had worked in a game since going a season-high seven in a loss to the Baysox on May 1.

Barker (3-1) earned the win, scattering just three hits over eight frames. He walked one and struck out six.

The SeaWolves will look to snap a four-game losing streak on Wednesday night in Bowie at 6:35 p.m. Righty Artie Lewicki (2-2, 4.14 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against LHP John Means (2-5, 4.25 ERA).
