
Mathisen Delivers Walk-Off in Extras as Curve Beat 'Ducks

CURVE, Pa. - The Altoona Curve won their fourth straight game, beating the Akron RubberDucks, 5-4 on a walk-off hit by Wyatt Mathisen in the bottom of the tenth on Tuesday at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Altoona (28-21) scored the game-winning run Mathisen's line drive single, scoring Edwin Espinal from third to beat Akron (22-25).
In the top of the ninth with Altoona leading 4-2, Eric Haase greeted Tate Scioneaux with a solo home run to pull back within a run. Two batters later, Yu Chang hit another solo homer for Akron, his team-leading tenth of the year, to tie the game 4-4 and force extra innings.
The Curve struck first in the second inning with a solo homer by Jordan Luplow, his team-leading eleventh of the season. It was his third home run in the last two games.
In the seventh, Yu Chang singled home a run to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Mark Mathias hit a deep fly ball to left field. Luplow made a leaping catch at the wall for the out, but Haase scored from third on the sacrifice fly to give the RubberDucks a 2-1 lead.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Curve grabbed a 4-2 lead after three consecutive two-out RBI singles from Elvis Escobar, Kevin Newman and Pablo Reyes.
All five of Altoona's runs were scored with two outs.
Brandon Waddell started for the Curve and threw six shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out six. Tate Scioneaux allowed all four Akron runs (three earned) in relief spanning three innings pitched. Buddy Borden (Win, 4-0) came on in the tenth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning while striking out a batter.
Akron starter Thomas Pannone pitched six innings and allowed just one earned runs on three hits while striking out four. Cameron Hill (Loss, 2-2) allowed the winning hit in the tenth.
Altoona will continue the homestand on Wednesday against Akron with game two in the three-game series. The Curve will send right-hander Tanner Anderson (2-5, 4.29) to the mound, while Akron will counter with right-hander Matt Esparza, who will make his Double-A debut. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
It will be Winning Wednesday, presented by the Pennsylvania Lottery, where fans have the chance to win prizes, including free lottery tickets for a month. Plus if the Curve win, fans can redeem their ticket at the Curve box office to receive a ticket of equal or lesser value to another Wednesday home game in 2017. It will also be Wing Wednesday, featuring 50-cent boneless wings at concessions.
