Alaska Drops Second Striaght Shootout 2-1
February 26, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
For the second straight game the Alaska Aces and their top-ranked defense played well enough to earn a victory. However, for the second straight game the visiting Las Vegas Wranglers squeezed out a narrow shootout victory. Las Vegas tied the game late in regulation and edged Alaska in a 2-1 extra session win Saturday night in front of a standing-room only, sold out crowd of 6,599 fans at Sullivan Arena. Alaska picked up points for the fourth straight game, but fell to 35-14-8, on the season. Alaska now holds a three-point lead over Las Vegas in the Western Conference race for first place. They failed to win in consecutive home games for the first time this season. The Aces will finish their home stand on Sunday night at 5:05pm AKT. Tickets are on sale now. The Aces took the first lead of the game midway through the first period with the only goal of the first 57 minutes of regulation. Wes Goldie ripped a slap shot past Joe Fallon from the right circle at 10:24 for his team-leading 29th goal of the season to make it 1-0 Aces. Minutes before that, Las Vegas though they had opened the scoring on a Judd Blackwater shot on a two-on-one. However, despite the Wranglers reacting as if a goal was scored, the referee never signaled for a goal, and after a brief discussion among on and off-ice officials, no goal was awarded. The Aces outshot the Wranglers 7-3 in the period.
Things opened up a bit more in the second period with Alaska outshooting Las Vegas 11-9 in the frame. Yet neither team was able to score in the frame. Rookie netminder, James Reid, who was making his Aces debut and Las Vegas' Joe Fallon traded saves with Alaska taking their one-goal advantage into the third period.
With the Aces nursing a late 1-0 lead in the third period, the Wranglers finally spoiled Reid's shutout bid and tied the score. Sean Wiles swapt a centering pass from the left circle that caromed off of Aces forward, Ethan Cox's skate and into his own net at 17:01 of the third period. The goal forced overtime, and the Wranglers outlasted the Aces in a six-round shootout for the win.
James Reid (0-0-1) took the shootout loss, making 20 saves on 21 shots. He stopped four of six shooters in the shootout. Joe Fallon (29-10-4) earned the win, stopping 28 of 29 shots, and turning aside five of six in the shootout. The Aces power play went 0-5, while the Wranglers went 0-4. The Aces outshot the Wranglers 29-22 in the game.
The Aces will finish their home stand on Sunday night at 5:05pm AKT. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, please call the Aces at 907.258.ACES or visit them online at www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.
