Akron sweeps the \'Dogs 1-0 and 8-1

(Portland, ME) - The Akron Aeros (45-22) swept a doubleheader from the Portland Sea Dogs (32-35) taking the opener 1-0 (9-innings) and grabbing the nightcap 8-1 on Saturday night at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs have lost four in a row for the first time this season and look to salvage the series finale on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 PM.

In game one, Akron 3B Jared Goedert delivered a 2-out, run-scoring single to snap a scoreless game in the top of the ninth. Goedert singled off losing pitcher RHP Bryce Cox (0-2) and finished the twinbill 4-for-7, 2 RBI. Portland has lost both extra-inning games this season - Akron has won 5 of 6 games contests that have gone extra-frames.

RHP Erik Stiller (5-3) worked a scoreless eighth inning on one hit to earn the win for Akron. In the bottom of the ninth inning, RHP Vinnie Pestano escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam to end the game. Pestano retired RF Reid Engel (foul out) and 3B Iggy Suarez (strikeout) to secure his league-leading 19th save of the year.

RHP Junichi Tazawa worked 5.1 scoreless frames on two hits, four walks and five strikeouts in a no-decision. Akron starter RHP Hector Rondon did not allow a run over 4.2 IP as the Aeros earned their 8th team shutout of the season.

In the nightcap, the Aeros scored the final 8 runs of the game, including 5 off RHP Richie Lentz in just .2 of an inning in relief. RHP Josh Tomlin (7-4) yielded three hits over 5 IP on one run to pick up the win for the visitors. Portland took a first inning lead on a 2-out solo homer by 3B Jorge Jimenez (8th of the season). 1B Jon Still followed with a double but Portland had only one base runner the rest of the game - LF Ryan Kalish's infield single in the fifth inning.

RHP Ryne Lawson (1-6) surrendered three runs (one earned) over 4.1 IP to take the loss for Portland. RHP Zach Putnam retired the final six batters to notch his second save of the season.

Akron trailed 1-0 entering the third inning but scored twice off Lawson on 1B Beau Mills (2-for-3, 4 RBI) 2-run single. Mills provided an RBI triple in the fifth and a sac-fly during Akron's 5-run seventh inning. DH Carlos Santana nailed a 2-run double and LF Nick Weglarz walked and scored three times.

Portland wraps up their 6-game homestand on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 PM contest from Hadlock Field against the Aeros (Indians affiliate). RHP Adam Mills will take on LHP Scott Lewis. Notes...Kalish has hit safely in 11 of 13 games...Portland has dropped three games under .500 for the first time this season - they have dropped 8 of 11 during their 12-game stretch against the Southern Division...RHP Chris Province worked 1.2 scoreless frames in game two.
