December 2, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.âThe Memphis RiverKings will host "Airwave Dave!" during this Friday and Saturday's games. "Airwave Dave!" is as close to "Austin Powers" as they come, and will regale RiverKings audiences with his shagadelic, costumed impersonations of the International Man of Mystery.
RiverKings Director of Game Operations Gene Szucs said the RiverKings hosted Airwave Dave! for the first time two years ago to a record RiverKings crowd of 7,200.
"He looked really entertaining and high-quality," Szucs said. "The San Antonio Iguanas team really loved him."
And it turned out, so did the RiverKings crowd.
"I think the fans really got jazzed from him," Szucs said. "The first night they didn't know what to make of him, but the second night they were really into it. He really knows how to get the crowd excited.
"In and out of character, he IS a character. He epitomizes what entertainment is about, from an impressionist standpoint."
Airwave Dave! has a host of other talents as well, including musical abilities. He can play 14 different musical instruments, although piano his strong suit. He studied classical conservatory in New England from age 7 to 14.
Airwave Dave! will entertain crowds at Hunter Brown's Sports Bar and Café immediately following the RiverKings game on Saturday, combining his International Man of Mystery prowess and his keyboard capabilities in a crowd-rocking piano bar sing-a-long.
Airwave Dave!, also known in the radio news and entertainment world as Dave Krieger, runs a business from his home in San Antonio, Texas which includes his touring characters, mobile disc jockey and piano-playing capabilities, and radio spots recorded in his digital recording studio. Krieger's background in radio extends back to 1968, and includes state and national awards in news radio.
"I just use my voice in any way I can," Krieger said. "I consider myself an actor in this part."
Airwave Dave! has played for minor league baseball teams from coast to coast and audiences ranging in size from 500 to 15,000.
"I do 80 different character voices, but people really play into this one," Krieger said of his "Austin Powers" impersonation. "I was at Polly Esther's night club in San Antonio on the Riverwalk a couple of years ago. They were doing a party for the premier of the second movie, âThe Spy Who Shagged Me,' and they asked me to come dressed somewhat like the character. My wife is a talented makeup artist, and when I walked in and opened my mouth, they said, âOh my gosh. You're a dead ringer for him.'"
As for this weekend's presentation, Szucs said that fans will leave feeling more than satisfied and thoroughly entertained.
"It's always nice to add fresh elements to our presentations, and he's definitely different," Szucs said. "He is very professional and will do everything to make sure the fans get the best bang for their buck, win or lose."
