McGrane Called Up
December 2, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, Texas: December 1, 2003 â Corpus Christi Rayz rookie forward Ed McGrane was called up to the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League on Monday morning, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President Pat Dunn announced. McGrane was leading the Rayz with 14 goals and 21 points.
McGrane, 25, is playing in his first professional season after finishing four years at the University of Massachusetts â Lowell, where he led the team in scoring in each of the last three years. He is the first player this season to get called up to Houston of the AHL. In the off-season, the Rayz signed a brand new affiliation with the Houston Aeros of the AHL and the Minnesota Wild of the NHL. This summer, McGrane was signed as a free agent by the Minnesota Wild and he was assigned to Corpus Christi just before the regular season started. In 19 games for the Rayz this season, McGrane has 14 goals, seven assists, 21 points and is ranked 16th in the Central Hockey League in scoring.
"I'm pretty excited," said McGrane. "This will be my first time (in the AHL) so I'm just going to go up there and try and do my best." Through the first quarter of the season, McGrane's best has been good enough to lead the Rayz. The 5'11", 190lbs. native of Hamilton, Ont. is a skilled forward with a lot of speed. He played on the power play unit, penalty kill and the Rayz number one line. Before Saturday night's loss to Austin, McGrane had scored goals in seven of his last eight games.
"It's going to be extremely difficult to replace a guy like Ed," Dunn said. "He was so valuable to this club, but we realize what a great opportunity this is for a young kid. The way he has played, he certainly deserves this and we wish him the best of luck."
McGrane will play his first game for the Aeros tomorrow night as they travel to Utah to take on the Grizzlies.
The Rayz next game is Friday December 5th against the Expansion Colorado Eagles. Corpus Christi now has one roster spot open that they can fill in that time. Tickets are still available by calling (361) 814-PUCK. Fans can catch some Rayz in the middle of the week, however with the Corpus Christi Rayz Toys for Tots drive Wednesday December 3rd from 2:30-4:30pm at the Toys R Us on Airline, one block down from SPID. Players will be collecting toys for youngsters and signing autographs. Anyone who donates will receive $5 off a Rayz ticket. Call the Rayz offices for more information and help make this Holiday Season special for a less fortunate child with your donation.
