December 2, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release
LUBBOCK â Lubbock Cooper South students were excited to meet Cotton Kings' defenseman, Derek Holland on Monday. Holland attended the âStick With Reading' party for the outstanding students which included pizza provided by Papa John's and drinks provided by Coca Cola for the five MVP's of Lubbock Cooper South's fourth grade class.
To keep the parties rolling, Craig Binns visited Alderson Academy Tuesday afternoon to encourage a group of 18 students to continue their reading habits. The party at Alderson Academy was the second party of the season honoring students with outstanding reading achievements.
This is the fourth year the incentive-based reading program has been incorporated in the Lubbock and surrounding schools. The program is implemented during the second, third and fourth 6-weeks of the school year correlating with the Cotton Kings season.
Three levels of achievement are possible within the program, goal-scorers, all-stars, and MVP's. Goal-scorers are students who meet the goal set for the grade level. They receive a voucher valid for a student's attendance to a Cotton King's home game. The second level of achievement is the all-stars. All-stars are students who go beyond the set goal. They receive a voucher valid for a student's attendance to a Cotton King's home game as well as the post game skate. The MVP's are students who achieve the most points in their class. They are awarded an all-star voucher as well as a special party with a Cotton Kings' player, Eli the mascot, and/or the Royal's Spirit Squad.
The Lubbock Cotton Kings along with Abbeville Dentistry, Covenant Health System, Kinko's, Jent's House of Music, Carl's Jr., and Papa John's Pizza, sponsor the Stick With Reading program for several Lubbock and surrounding communities schools.
