AirHogs End Losing Streak in Sloppy Affair

The Grand Prairie AirHogs got their first win of the second half and ended a 14 game losing streak holding off a big come-back attempt from the El Paso Diablos and winning 12-9 on Monday night at Cohen Stadium. The game featured 10 errors as both teams committed five. El Paso drops their fifth straight game.

Grand Prairie got a quick start as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. El Paso would respond with one run in the third inning on a Benji Johnson home run. The Airhogs got the offense going again in the fourth inning scoring two runs on just one hit, two walks and an error. They opened up a 10 run lead in the fifth by scoring five runs on just three hits as two errors were made in the inning as well. El Paso cut the lead in half with five runs in the seventh with Bryon Smith having the big hit in the inning, a two RBI double. They would cut into the lead again in the seventh when they scored two runs, one on a Reininger single and another one on an error. El Paso cut the lead down to two runs on a Ponce single in the eight, but that would be as close as they would get. The Airhogs scored a run in the final inning to push the lead to three. The sloppiness between the two teams resulted in both committing five errors which was one short of a league record for both teams.

The Diablos out hit the AirHogs 11-9. El Paso was led on offense by Arnoldo Ponce who went 3-5 with a triple and two RBI. Mike Provencher had another nice offensive output going 2-5 with two doubles. Jonathan Reynoso's only hit in the game was a triple which ties him with Hector Bernal for the league lead in triples.

Ryan Tacker picked up his first win against El Paso this season in his third attempt. Tacker (4-3) pitched six inning and allowed only two earned runs on six hits and six strike outs. El Paso starter Shaun Ellis (8-2) had his shortest outing of the season as he lasted only four innings allowing six earned runs on six hits and five walks and suffers his first loss since May 27. Barry Fowler gave the Diablos a chance by coming in and pitching four strong innings. He allowed just two unearned runs on two hits.

El Paso now looks to end their losing streak on Tuesday night. They send William Buzhardt (1-1, 9.14) to the mound. Grand Prairie has yet to name a starter for the game.
