AHL Leafs to Relocate

August 9, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Toronto Marlies News Release

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. (MLSEL) announced Monday that the St. John's Maple Leafs will relocate to Toronto when their affiliate agreement with the City of St. John's expires in 2005. The team's relocation was approved earlier today by the American Hockey League (AHL) Board of Governors.

"We would like to thank the City of St. John's, Mayor Andy Wells, Chairman of St. John's Sports & Entertainment Ltd. Keith Coombs, Glenn Stanford, the employees of the St. John's Maple Leafs and especially the fans for their tremendous support for the past 13 seasons," said Bob Hunter, executive vice-president and general manager of MLSEL. "This was a difficult decision to make and one with mixed emotions. While St. John's was a great home for our AHL franchise, the team's tough travel schedule combined with the proximity of other AHL franchises were factors behind our decision to relocate.

"We also see this as an opportunity to move our AHL franchise closer to our NHL team, so we can closely monitor player development and the team can benefit from the resources of the Toronto Maple Leafs. We look forward to making our last season in St. John's an exciting one."

The St. John's Maple Leafs will remain in Newfoundland for the 2004-05 season and will move to Toronto for the start of the 2005-06 season. A decision on the team's Toronto-based home arena has not been determined.
