Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME - American Hockey League fans showed their generosity and caring during the 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic. The Portland Pirates announced today that fans donated more than $5,300 during the event for the Jennifer Ferraro Fund for gastric cancer research. The money was raised through a visiting Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit during the All-Star Classic in which fans paid to have their pictures taken with the Stanley Cup. The Portland Professional Hockey Booster Club also donated its share of the 50/50 proceeds from the All-Star Game to the fund. That night's winner, Barbara Megathlin of Cumberland, Maine, donated some of her winnings. Additionally, the Manchester Monarchs' booster club contributed money to the fund.
"The hockey world clearly looks after its own," said Brian Petrovek, Pirates CEO. "We are very pleased that the 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic was not only an enjoyable event for hockey fans throughout North America but also one that will have such a positive impact on the Jennifer Ferraro Fund."
Jennifer Ferraro was the wife of Portland Pirates' center and 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic PlanetUSA co-captain Chris Ferraro who passed away on November 5, 2002 after a thirteen-month battle with stomach cancer. The fund was established in her memory to benefit gastric cancer research at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York and the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland where she was treated.
