AHL Calder Cup in Rochester Thursday and Friday

(Rochester, NY)... The American Hockey League's Calder Cup 2005 Tour will make a two-day visit to Rochester in late March during its 47-day excursion around the AHL. The Cup will arrive in the Flower City on Thursday, March 24th for a media day. The following day, the Cup will be on display as the Amerks host their oldest rival, the Hershey Bears, at 7:35 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena.

On Thursday, the Cup will make four stops throughout Rochester. The tour will begin at noon at Nathaniel's Pub at 251 Exchange Blvd. The AHL's championship trophy will then visit the Amerks Office at The Blue Cross Arena from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Cup's last two stops are the ESL Sports Centre (5:00 to 7:00 p.m.) and Dick's Sporting Goods in Marketplace Mall (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.).

On Friday, the Cup will appear at Entercom Radio in the High Falls District from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. The trophy will then break for lunch at The Distillery at 1142 Mt. Hope Ave. After the two-hour visit, it's on to Locker Room Sports at 2184 West Ridge Road in Greece. The final stop is The Blue Cross Arena, where fans can see the trophy from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m.

Making its ninth annual excursion around the American Hockey League, the coveted Calder Cup will cover more than 12,000 miles as it travels to 19 cities, making appearances at games, schools, area sponsors, local TV and radio stations and various other community events. The tour leads up to the start of the 2005 Calder Cup Playoffs in mid-April.

The 2005 Calder Cup Tour offers fans the opportunity to view up close one of the oldest trophies in North American sports. The Calder Cup, which has been competed for since the 1936-37 season, features the names of players, coaches and support staff from the last 20 American Hockey League champions (the other 48 champions' plaques are on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto), and is accompanied by a special display highlighting the intensity and excitement of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

In conjunction with the tour, the AHL has unveiled a redesigned logo for the 2005 Calder Cup Playoffs, which can be seen on theahl.com. Additionally, all AHL arenas will display specially-designed 2005 Calder Cup Playoffs posters displaying the rich tradition and history surrounding the quest for the Calder Cup.

The AHL's championship trophy is named after Hockey Hall of Famer Frank Calder, who served as the first president of the National Hockey League from 1917-43. During the 1920s, Calder was instrumental in guiding professional hockey into the mainstream of the United States' major cities, including New York, Boston, Chicago and Detroit, while also helping in the formation of the American Hockey League.

Twenty-six members of the Hockey Hall of Fame are among the more than 1,200 different players, coaches and managers who have won the Calder Cup, including Terry Sawchuk, Emile Francis, Gerry Cheevers, Larry Robinson, Frank Mathers, Bill Barber, Tim Horton and Johnny Bower.

Rochester has won the coveted league championship trophy six times in its history (1965, 1966, 1968, 1983, 1987 and 1996). The Amerks last captured the Calder Cup in 1996, defeating the Portland Pirates in seven games.

Such notable Rochester Americans that have won the Calder Cup include Cheevers, Al Arbour, Don Cherry, Jody Gage, Randy Cunneyworth, Dick Gamble and Jim Jackson.
