Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Outfielder Chris Aguila belted a sixth-inning grand slam to help send the Albuquerque Isotopes (55-57) to a commanding 10-2 victory over the Salt Lake Bees (65-47) in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday night at Franklin Covey Field. The win in the night-cap helped the âTopes, who dropped the first contest 8-3, preserve a doubleheader split.
After an RBI single by Mike Kinkade extended an Isotope lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning, Jason Wood drew a walk to load the bases for Aguila, who put the game on ice with a monster grand slam home run to left that gave the Isotopes a 9-2 lead. The outfielder also struck an inning earlier with an RBI double that put Albuquerque up 4-2, giving Aguila a total of five RBI in the contest.
The âTopes jumped out to an immediate lead thanks to Wood, who belted a three-run home run in the first to give Albuquerque a quick 3-0 advantage the Isotopes would never relinquish. Isotopes starter Yusmeiro Petit (3-4) earned the win after allowing two runs on six hits through five innings of work while walking one and fanning three while his Bees counterpart, Jonathon Rouwenhorst (5-6) took the loss.
While home runs were the story for Albuquerque in game two, it was Salt Lake that took advantage of the long ball in the evening's first contest, as the Bees bombed three homers, two off the bat of Kensley Morales, to down the âTopes 8-3.
With the game knotted at 2-2, Salt Lake took control in the bottom of the third when, after a Tommy Murphy single scored Erick Aybar, Morales hit a three-run home run to right to give the Bees a 6-2 lead. The home team would then cap the five run frame on a solo home run by Jason Aspito to give Salt Lake a 7-2 advantage. In addition to a solo home run in the first, Morales would finish the first game with a run scoring single in the sixth to give him five RBI.
The Isotopes and Bees will resume their four game set tomorrow with left-hander Jason Vargas (2-2, 4.54) taking on fellow lefty Nathan Bland (4-3, 4.65). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM Mountain Time.
After four games in Salt Lake followed by four more in Colorado Springs, the âTopes return home on August 11 for four games against the Nashville Sounds that will include the Isotopes' special Back To School Celebration and Fireworks Spectacular on August 13, a bonus pyrotechnics display that will bring the total number of fireworks shows at Isotopes Park to a whopping 12. Tickets can be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, www.albuquerquebaseball.com, Ticketmaster outlets, or at www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255
