Portland Beavers News Release

OMAHA, Neb. - Brian Sweeney allowed just two hits over six innings in his second start of the year and teamed with three Portland relievers on a 5-0, four-hit shutout over the Omaha Royals Thursday night at Rosenblatt stadium.

Jason Anderson, Mike Adams and Scott Cassidy each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Beavers (55-57), who have won the first two games in each of their last four series.

Sweeney (1-0), who made a combined 33 relief appearances between San Diego and Portland before getting his first start of the campaign July 29, did not allow a walk and struck out four. The right-hander retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced, allowing just two singles.

Justin Leone hit his 18th home run and Kennard Jones was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

The win improved the Beavers to 12-2 all-time at Rosenblatt Stadium. Portland has not lost in Omaha since April 23, 2002.

The win came at the expense of former Beaver Seth Etherton (3-4), who took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings in his first start against his old team. Etherton was 2-2 with a 4.38 ERA in nine starts with the Beavers this season prior to a trade that sent him to Kansas City on May 27.

Jack Cust drew three walks and scored twice for the Beavers, who also got two hits from George Kottaras. Cust continues to lead professional baseball with 112 walks.

The two clubs meet again Friday night at 5:05 p.m. (PDT). Dewon Brazelton, the reigning Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week, gets the start for Portland. Brazelton has allowed just one run over his last 25 1/3 innings.

NOTES: Manny Alexander went 0-for-4 with an RBI to have his hitting streak halted at nine games ... it was Portland's eighth shutout victory of the year ... the Beavers allowed just one walk ... Omaha has lost four games in a row and is a league-worst 44-69 on the year.
