Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH- Akron's Roberto Perez singled home Ben Copeland in the bottom of the fourteenth inning to give the Aeros a walk-off 3-2 victory over the Bowie Baysox at Canal Park.
Perez's game-winning single off Kyler Newby (2-2) was the first run scored by either team since the seventh inning, and Akron's first since the fifth inning.
The Aeros collected just nine hits with Tim Fedroff logging the sole multi-hit performance of the night. Runs batted in came courtesy of Adam Abraham, Fedroff, and Perez.
Brett Brach started the game for the Aeros, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing one run. After allowing a two-out run in the first inning, Brach settled down and pitched effectively. Brach shut out the Baysox for the next five innings scattering nine hits and striking out two before departing.
The combination of Toru Murata, Loek van Mil, and Jose De La Torre shut down the Bowie offense and yielded just one hit over seven combined innings. The Akron relief trio retired 18 consecutive batters from the eight to the fourteenth innings. De La Torre (2-0) recorded his second win by tossing two shutout innings.
Akron equaled the score at 1 in the fourth inning on Abraham's sacrifice fly. In the fifth the Aeros took the lead for good when Fedroff doubled home Davis Stoneburner. The Baysox knotted it again in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Antoan Richardson. The game remained 2-2 until Perez's heroics in the fourteenth. Robbie Widlansky and Richardson led the Bowie offense, as each drove home runs for the Baysox. Zach Britton pitched seven innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out five in a rehab assignment for Baltimore, Bowie's parent club.
With the win, the Aeros (32-19) sweep the three-game series against Bowie (22-31). The Aeros retain the best record in the Eastern League and improve to 20-7 at home.
The Aeros will start a four-game series against the Mets on Friday night at 7:05 in Binghamton. RHP Steven Wright (1-2, 4.96) will start for Akron and face a Mets starter that has yet to be announced. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.
