Goins Stamps Record Books in 6-5 Loss

MANCHESTER, NH. - Ryan Goins put his stamp on the Fisher Cats records books with three hits on Thursday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The multi-hit day pushed Goins to 41 hits in May, setting a new single month team record. Unfortunately, the Fisher Cats (20-31) needed a few more clutch hits as a comeback bid against New Britain fell a run short, 6-5, in front of an EnergyNorth Propane Educational Day crowd of 7,480.

Goins came into the game with 38 hits in twenty-six May games. He tied the record of 40 hits with a pair of doubles in the first and third innings, equaling the mark set by Eastern League MVP Travis d'Arnaud in July of 2011.

The record-breaker took place in the seventh with the Fisher Cats trailing 6-1 by that point. With two outs, three straight singles, including a run-scoring knock from Brian Jeroloman cut the deficit to 6-2. That's when Goins stepped up and knocked in another run with his third hit of the game, a clean single to center field to make the score 6-3.

New Hampshire added another run in the eighth on a bases loaded walk by Jeroloman. A one-out single in the ninth cut the New Britain lead to 6-5 before the Fisher Cats stranded the game-tying run at first base to end the game.

Chris Colabello shined for the Rock Cats (31-21), driving in all six runs with a double and a grand slam. He made a winner out of starter Andrew Albers (W; 2-1), who now has two wins against the Fisher Cats this season. Joel Carreno (L; 1-2) took the loss for New Hampshire after giving up two runs over 5.1 innings.

Goins finished the game 3-5 with an RBI. He ended May with 41 hits in 115 at-bats for a .357 average. He is hitting a team-high .323 heading into the month of June.

Jeroloman had his first multi-RBI game of the season with a single and the aforementioned bases loaded walk. Mike McDade extended his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games with a single in the eighth. McDade finished May with a .346 average (37-for-107) while Brian Van Kirk drove home his 15th run of the month with a single in the ninth.

The Fisher Cats now hit the road for a brief four-game trip against the Trenton Thunder beginning Friday night at 7:05 PM. The series-opener features a battle of southpaws as Brett Cecil (3-2, 3.71) takes the ball against Trenton's Vidal Nuno (0-1, 0.00). The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium for a six-game homestand beginning on Tuesday night with the CCSNH Reading Challenge Night.
