Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Left-handed starter Scott Barnes is the winner of this week's Akron Aeros Player of the Week award, the team announced today. He was excellent in his one start this past week when the Aeros played seven games in six days on the road against the Altoona Curve and the New Britain Rock Cats. This is the first weekly recognition of the season for Barnes and he is just the second Aeros pitcher to win it as well.
Barnes started Friday night against the Rock Cats and pitched seven scoreless frames in the 2-1 Akron victory. The lefty pitched dominated in front of 7,268 supportive fans at New Britain Stadium, just 45 minutes away from his home town of Chicopee, MA. He earned the victory in his homecoming, finishing with eight strikeouts against two hits, only permitting four base runners total while retiring 18 of his final 19 batters in the game.
The performance continued an impressive streak of late for the 22-year-old product of St. John's University. In his past 11 starts over the past two months exactly, he is now 5-3 with a 3.34 ERA despite still never winning back-to-back games this season. For the year, he holds a 6-8 record and a 4.83 ERA, and leads the Aeros with 21 games started, 110.0 innings pitched and 99 strikeouts, fourth most in the Indians Player Development System.
Cleveland acquired Barnes from the San Francisco Giants in a July 2009 trade for former Akron Aeros slugger Ryan Garko. San Francisco originally selected Barnes in the eighth round of the June 2008 Draft and at the time of the trade, he led the Class A California League with 12 wins and ranked third with a 2.81 ERA. He quickly earned his first-ever promotion to Double-A with Akron and then was the winning pitcher for the Aeros in the deciding Game 4 of the 2009 Eastern League Championship Series.
The Akron Aeros will award their Player of the Week honor to an individual player every Monday for the rest of the season. In the case of a Monday closure of the team offices, the Aeros will announce the award Tuesday. Akron center fielder Jordan Henry won the award last week, and Barnes is the sixth different player to win the award in the past eight weeks. This week, the separate Eastern League Player-Pitcher of the Week Awards went to Portland's Anthony Rizzo and Erie's Brooks Brown, respectively.
Following last week's road trip, the Aeros returned to Ohio last night and begin the longest remaining home stand of the season Tuesday night against the Reading Phillies. It is a Two for Tuesday at Canal Park starting at 7:05 p.m. and fans can enjoy buy one, get one free specials on tickets, hot dogs, ice cream, popcorn and soft drinks. Recently acquired right-hander Corey Kluber (0-1, 6.75 ERA) will make his second start for Akron against Reading lefty Yohan Flande (7-7, 4.49 ERA). Tuesday night's radio broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Akron Aeros team offices at (330) 253-5151.
