Aerodynamics...

* Dog Catching...The Aeros tied up their three-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs thanks to a 5-1 victory last night in front of 4,564 fans at Canal Park. The Akron offense burst out of the gates with 11 hits, including five extra-base hits after the Sea Dogs shut out the Aeros Friday night. Starter Ryan Edell improved to 2-0 in his seventh start of the season by delivering five efficient innings while allowing four hits, three walks, one run and striking out six. DH Matt McBride got Akron on the board with a solo homer in the second, and the Aeros pushed the advantage to 3-0 with two-out RBIs from CF Jose Constanza and 2B Jerad Head. Portland pushed a run across in the fourth but Akron got two big insurance runs in the fifth and held on from there, despite a bases-loaded scare in the eighth that resulted in closer Vinnie Pestano entering a game before the ninth inning for the first time all season. The Aeros improved to 39-21 with the victory and lead Reading by 3.5 games in the South.

* Lehigh Pride...DH Matt McBride returned from a week-long absence while battling a left knee injury to go 2-3 with two walks last night, including his first home run as an Aero (in his 22nd game) in the second inning. The product of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA had his finest offensive performance for Akron, and his fifth-inning RBI double provided the final margin. In 53 games between Kinston and the Aeros, McBride is batting .340 with 7 home runs, 48 RBI, and 21 doubles.

* My Closer Vinnie...RHP Vinnie Pestano worked his longest outing of the season yesterday, as he went the old-fashioned route by delivering 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball to earn his Eastern League-leading 16th save of the season in 19 opportunities. The product of Cal State-Fullerton stranded all three runners he inherited in the top of the eighth, and earned his fourth save in the last week. On the season, the 24-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA as he now leads the Cleveland Indians player development system and is tied for sixth in all of the minor leagues in saves.

* Defense Wins Championships... After committing 19 errors in the first 18 games of the season, the Aeros defense has seem to come into a zone over the last two months. Akron has had only 24 errors in their last 42 games of the season, including 25 games without a single error at all. On the year, when the Aeros do not commit an error they have a record of 24-8 meaning they are only 15-13 when they do have an error. Akron now ranks fourth in the Eastern League with a .980 fielding percentage and are on pace to smash the franchise-record for the least errors committed in a season set last year when they had only 111.

* The Rotation Jig...The Aeros are expected to have Cleveland Indians left-hander Scott Lewis appear in a pair of ball games on the upcoming road trip. Lewis, who claimed the fifth spot in the Tribe rotation out of spring training, made just one start for the Indians before going on the DL with a strained left forearm. He has previously made one rehab appearance for Lake County.
