Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders (35-28) dropped the series finale to the Altoona Curve 3-2 in extra innings Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,018.

LF-Jason Delaney delivered his second RBI single of the game to drive in 3B-Hector Gimenez who doubled, for the game winner in the tenth. Altoona collected its second series victory in the month of June.

The Curve touched the scoreboard in the first as Delaney drove in Gimenez for the first time of the day to give Altoona a 1-0 advantage.

Connecticut responded in the second. 1B-Adam Witter doubled, C-Tyler LaTorre singled, placing runners on the corners for RHP-Daryl Maday who chopped one through the right side of the infield for a game tying RBI single.

The Defenders took their first and only lead in the fifth inning. Back to back singles by 2B-Brock Bond and CF-Mike McBryde allowed 3B-Brad Boyer to sac bunt both into scoring position. LF-Bobby Felmy then delivered a sac fly to plate Bond and give the Defenders a 2-1 lead.

Defender's starter, RHP-Daryl Maday put together a solid performance but made a key mistake on his first pitch of the seventh as RF-Jonel Pacheco sent a solo homer over the right-field wall to tie the game at two. Maday finished with two earned runs off of five hits, walked a pair and struck out two in six innings of a no decision.

A combination of RHP-Jeff Sues and RHP- Sean Smith (3-1) shut down late rallies from Connecticut as Smith picked up his third win of the season tossing two scoreless innings of one hit ball and fanned three. Defender's closer, RHP-Dan Otero (0-2) suffered his second loss allowing one earned run off of two hits in 1.1 innings.

Connecticut hits the road Tuesday to start a six game road-trip, with stops in Trenton and Altoona for three game series in each. RHP-Tim Alderson (2-1) takes the bump against Trenton's RHP-Zach McAllister (5-2) in game one from Waterfront Park in Trenton, NJ at 7:05pm.
