Admirals Gain a Point in Overtime Loss to Stingrays

CHARLESTON, SC - Former Admiral Grant Besse scored merely six seconds into overtime as the South Carolina Stingrays topped the Norfolk Admirals 4-3 Wednesday Night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Despite the loss, Norfolk does pick up a valuable point in the South Division standings and are now unbeaten in regulation in their last three games (2-0-1-0).

South Carolina got on the board first with an early goal from Tim Harrison. Patrick Gaul gathered the puck in the right corner. Gaul played the puck to the top of the right circle for Kevin McKernan. McKernan played the puck to the top of the crease, where Harrison was able to redirect it over the pad of Madsen to give South Carolina an early 1-0 lead at 1:14 of the first period.

The Admirals tied the game on a goal from Chris Crane. Don Olivieri started the breakout of the Norfolk zone. Angeli received the pass at center ice and played it off for Chris Crane. Crane skated into the left circle and fired off a shot that beat Parker Milner over the glove to tie the game at one goal apiece at 3:46 of the first period.

The Stingrays reclaimed the lead with a goal from Matt Pohlkamp. Pohlkamp skated into the right circle on a four-on-four. Pohlkamp shot the puck using the defender as a screen and banked the shot off the left post past Madsen to give South Carolina a 2-1 lead at 14:25 of the first period.

Norfolk tied the game on a goal from Kelly Klima in the closing minutes of the opening frame. T.J. Melancon skated into the South 'Carolina zone on the left side on a two-on-one. Melancon fed a cross-ice pass which was intended for Duffy, which trickled into the right corner just out of Duffy's reach. A South Carolina defender turned the puck over along the wall. Ben Duffy fed a pass to Kelly Klima in the right circle and Klima beat Milner over the shoulder to tie the game at two goals apiece at 17:11 of the first period.

Less than six minutes into the second period, South Carolina went back ahead with a power-play goal from Matt Pohlkamp. Patrick Gaul played the puck over to the right circle for Andrew Cherniwchan. Cherniwchan played the puck over to Pohlkamp who fired a wrister from the circle beating a diving Madsen to give the Stingrays a 3-2 lead.

The Admirals would tie the game for a third time, with a goal from Ben Duff at 5:48 of the third. Connor Hurley was able to keep the puck in the South Carolina zone after a failed clear. Hurley fed a pass to Duffy in the slot who shot the puck over the glove of Milner for the equalizer.

Both teams exchanged chances for the remainder of the period, but neither team could find the go-ahead marker sending the game into overtime,

The Stingrays scores the game-winner just six seconds into the overtime with a goal from Grant Besse. Cherniwchan fed a cross-ice pass to Besse who skated into the zone on the left side. Besse skated through the slot and fired a backhand shot five-hole that beat Madsen to give South Carolina a 4-3 win.

Merrick Madsen made 32 saves on 36 shots in the setback, while Parker Milner earned the win making 27 saves on 30 shots faced.

The Admirals continue their road trip on Friday at Jacksonville. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
