Admirals Fall to Lake Erie 1-0

Milwaukee, WI - The Admirals lost 1-0 against the Lake Erie Monsters at the BMO Harris Bradley Center Wednesday night. The star of the night was Lake Erie goaltender Sami Aittokallio who picked up his first career AHL shutout with a lockdown 33 save performance.

The lone goal of the game was scored early on in the contest off of a deflection by Paul Carey for the visiting Monsters. From there it was black and blue forechecking hockey that saw the Admirals season-high point streak of seven games come to an end.

Carey's tally came from a cycle play by the Monsters at 7:10 of the opening period. A wrist shot from the right wing wall by Luke Walker was deflected at close range in front of the net by Carey. The redirection happened right on the edge of the crease which left little chance for Ads netminder Magnus Hellberg to pick out the shot.

The first period finished with shots fairly even at 10-9 in favor of the Monsters. While the opening frame saw plenty of chip and chase forechecking by both sides, the Ads Michael Latta has multiple quality chances against the Monsters goalie Sami Aittokallio. Latta was twice robbed by Aittokallio from point blank range on the side of the net. The Monsters were able to escape the first with a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

At 13:43 of the second period the Monsters had a goal waved off after Monsters left winger Vincent Arseneau shoved Ads forward Daniel Bang into his own goalie Hellberg. The goal initially stood, but the officials gathered at center ice and determined that Bang was launched into the goalie resulting in the no goal decision. While goaltender interference was the decisive reason behind the no goal call, there was no penalty associated with the play.

As this game progressed both teams were failing to capitalize on their man-advantage. Both Lake Erie and Milwaukee failed to score a PP goal, and both had numerous chances to light the lamp. The Monsters went 0/4 on the power-play and the Ads were 0/5. As it was, both goalies stood tall and contributed in the clutch for their teams when it mattered most.

Goalie Magnus Hellberg would take the hook for the Ads tonight. The rookie put up yet another solid effort in net. He stopped 18/19 shots he faced, and made incredible saves in the third period to keep the team within striking distance until the final horn sounded.

In the end, the Ads dropped their first in regulation in seven games and lost for the fourth straight time this season to Lake Erie. Notable performances from the Ads tonight include the line of Michael Latta, Mark Van Guilder, and Kevin Henderson who tallied nine of Milwaukee's thirty-three shots on goal.

Slated next for the Admirals is a three game road trip against their top two rivals, the Chicago Wolves and Rockford IceHogs. The Ads play at Rockford this Friday at 7:05pm and at Chicago Saturday at 7pm. The team will then rematch in Rockford Tuesday night at 7:05pm before returning home for a home bout against those same IceHogs. That home game is set for a 7:00pm start time and will be "fighting" Jeremy Smith bobblehead - commemorating the Ads/IceHogs bench clearing brawl that took place one-year ago.
