MANCHESTER, NH - Brandon Kozun scored twice including a shorthanded marker at 5:44 of the third period to lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 3-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals at the Verizon Wireless Arena Saturday evening.
It didn't take long for Manchester to get on the board, as Brandon Kozun lit the lamp at 1:15 of the first period. After a scramble in front of the Norfolk Net, Kozun cruised in and flipped a shot behind Norfolk netminder John Gibson for the goal.
The Monarchs added to their lead on the power play at 13:36 of the opening frame. Jordan Weal skated to the left wing circle and delivered a pass across the slot to Nick Deslauriers on the far wing. Deslauriers one-timed a shot past Gibson to extend the Manchester lead to 2-0 after the first 20 minutes played.
In the second, Norfolk used a power play opportunity of its own to pull within one. Alex Grant rifled a slapshot from the point that was tipped and redirected into the net by Chris Wagner. The goal was Wagner's second of the season.
The Admirals had a chance to tie the game in the third on the power play, but the Monarchs turned the tables and seized a goal of their own. Kozun broke into the Admirals end for a shorthanded chance, and fired a shot with a defender on his hip that ripped into the net for the goal. Kozun's goal was his second of the game, and extended the Manchester lead to 3-1.
Despite the shorthanded marker, Norfolk continued to press. Max Sauve directed a pass from the goaline on the right wing side to the top of the crease. Rookie Antoine Laganiere gathered the puck and jabbed it around Manchester goaltender Jean-Francois Berube for the goal. Laganiere's goal was the first of his career and pulled the Admirals within one.
Some late penalties quelled Norfolk's comeback bid in the final minutes of regulation, as Manchester held on for the 3-2 victory. Norfolk ends the three-game road trip grabbing two standings points.
Berube earns the win stopping 28 of 30 shots faced, while Gibson takes the loss allowing three goals on 30 shots faced in the contest.
The Admirals will now return home for a pair of games against the Portland Pirates on Friday Nov. 22 and Saturday Nov. 23. The Nov. 22 game is Military Appreciation Night; all military personnel may purchase tickets for $11 when they present their valid Military I.D. to the Scope Box Office.
