Portland Pirates News Release
Lewiston, ME - In the second game of their three-game weekend, the Pirates fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Springfield Falcons. Gilbert Brule was the lone goal scorer for the Pirates and Mike Lee made 30 saves, but Springfield's Mike McKenna stopped 35 Pirate shots on the way to the victory.
Through the first two periods, the game remained scoreless though the Pirates had plenty of good chances. Portland had a great opportunity about midway through the second when they earned a two-man advantage but Springfield's outstanding penalty killing refused shooting and passing lanes, limiting what the Pirates could do.
Later in the second, after serving a two minute penalty for hooking, Chris Brown jumped out of the penalty box and was immediately fed the puck. Brown skated in, pulled the puck onto the forehand but fired into the pads of McKenna, keeping the game deadlocked at 0-0.
Almost six minutes into the third, Brule put the Pirates on top 1-0 with a beautiful shorthanded goal. With Darian Dziurzynski off for interference, a Falcons defender tried to make a cross-ice pass at his blue line but whiffed, leaving Brule with a clear lane towards the Springfield goal. Brule made a quick move to his backhand to score his fifth goal of the season.
The Falcons turned up the heat afterwards, eventually cashing in on the power play with just under four minutes left in the game. Cody Goloubef wound up from the point and fired a low shot that Darryl Boyce tipped past Mike Lee to knot the game and send it into overtime.
Both teams had plenty of opportunities in the extra stanza but were unable to find the back of the net, bringing on a shootout.
In the fourth round of the shootout with the score 1-1, Sean Collins skated in on Lee and slid the puck between the netminder's leg pads. Chris Brown shot next for the Pirates, needing a goal to continue the game, but was stopped by McKenna, securing the win for the Falcons.
The Pirates will be back in action Sunday when they travel to Providence to face the Bruins at 3:05 p.m. In their only meeting of the year so far, the Pirates fell 5-2 to the Bruins on October 12th at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Jordan Szwarz and Jordan Martinook each scored for the Pirates in that game. Tomorrow's game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
