Admirals and Checkers Set to Battle for Geico Challenge Cup in 2011-12

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals and Charlotte Checkers will battle for the GEICO Challenge Cup during the 2011-12 season, starting Friday, October 7.
"GEICO is proud to partner with the Admirals and Checkers for the GEICO Challenge Cup," said Joe Thomas, GEICO's vice president for the Mid-Atlantic region. "We are eager to provide the hockey fans in the Hampton Roads and Charlotte regions with an exciting season series between American Hockey League rivals."
The Admirals and Checkers play each other eight times during the 2011-12 regular season. Whichever team finishes with the most standings points in the season series will win the GEICO Challenge Cup. The season series opens October 7 at Norfolk Scope Arena and concludes at Time Warner Cable Arena on Sunday, March 18.
"We are excited to work with GEICO and the Checkers for the GEICO Challenge Cup," said Admirals Vice President Joe Gregory. "Last season, the Admirals and Checkers established a strong rivalry. With the Checkers moving outside of the Eastern Conference, having the GEICO Challenge Cup will keep the rivalry intact and add an additional component of excitement for our team and fans."
