Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers and Norfolk Admirals will take part in the GEICO Challenge Cup during the 2011-12 season, the teams announced today.
The Checkers and Admirals play each other eight times during the 2011-12 regular season and whichever team finishes with the most standings points in the season series will win and receive a branded trophy at the conclusion of the series.
The season series opens Friday, Oct. 7 at Norfolk Scope Arena and concludes at Time Warner Cable Arena on Sunday, Mar. 18.
"GEICO is proud to partner with the Admirals and Checkers for the GEICO Challenge Cup," said GEICO regional vice president Joe Thomas. "We are eager to provide the hockey fans in the Hampton Roads and Charlotte regions with an exciting season series between American Hockey League rivals."
The Checkers and Admirals met 12 times in 2010-11, with Charlotte winning seven times. In an off-season divisional re-alignment, the two rivals, closest in proximity to one another, were moved into separate conferences.
"We are excited to work with GEICO and to continue the rivalry with the Admirals," said Checkers senior vice president Aaron Osborne. "With our team now playing in the Western Conference, we believe the GEICO Challenge Cup will add an element of interest and excitement for our players and fans."
Opening night for the 2011-12 season is Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. as the Checkers host the Peoria Rivermen. The first 3,500 fans will receive a 3' x 5' house flag, courtesy of Time Warner Cable. Season tickets and mini-plans are now on sale and start as low as $10 per game. Ticket information can be obtained by calling 704-342-4-ICE or visiting www.gocheckers.com.
