Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Bo Cheesman broke out of a prolonged slump with a hat trick as Alaska completed a two-game sweep of Idaho with a 5-1 win in front of 3,759 Wednesday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces finish the season series 5-5 against the defending Kelly Cup champions, including victories in each of their last three match-ups. Once 16 points out of the West Division lead, Alaska (32-20-5 overall) has climbed to within six points of co-leaders Idaho and Victoria heading into a three-game series with the Salmon Kings this weekend.

John Lammers gave the Steelheads a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game, beating Aces goalie Mike Brown off the rush with a rocket just underneath the crossbar, his ninth goal in seven games against Alaska this year. Cheesman tied the game four minutes later with the first of two shorthanded goals for the Aces, taking advantage of a Darrell Hay turnover, feinting Idaho starter Matt Zaba out of position, and scoring his first goal in nine games (and first point in eight) with a wrist shot top shelf.

Cheesman again deked Zaba at 9:06 of the second period to push Alaska in front to stay at 2-1, with the lead growing to 3-1 two minutes later when Olivier Filion picked off a cross-ice pass by Jeremy Scherlinck and rifled a drive past Zaba for his 19th goal of the season. Another turnover by Idaho in its own end led to an unassisted goal for Michael Lambert with 1:38 left in the period that essentially put the game away. Cheesman completed the scoring, and his hat trick, by a taking a pass from Josh Soares and drilling his team-leading 28th goal of the season just inside the left post from the top of the right circle at 1:28 of the final period.

The Aces have won 11 of their last 12 games heading into Friday's series opener with the Salmon Kings (35-17-5) at 7:15 p.m. The series continues Saturday at 7:15 p.m. and Sunday at 5:05 p.m. (after which a post-game "Skate with the Aces," presented by Fred Meyer, will be held). Alaska has gone 3-3 against Victoria in six prior meetings this year. All regular season games are broadcast live on AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off.
