Aces Sign Defenseman Brock Shelgren

The Alaska Aces have signed rookie defenseman Brock Shelgren to a standard player contract, Aces Head coach Rob Murray announced on Friday. Shelgren recently completed his collegiate career at Michigan State University and will join the Aces in time for their games this weekend against the Ontario Reign. The Aces finish their season this weekend and are one point away from clinching their second straight Brabham Cup. The regular season Western Conference Champion Aces return back home for the Conference Semifinals in April. Shelgren, 23, joins the Aces for his pro debut this weekend, after a four-year career at Michigan State University. The 5'11", 175 lbs. blue liner finished with 29 points (8g, 21a) in 138 college games as a Spartan. This season as a senior, the Chicago, IL native had three goals and ten assists in 39 games. Shelgren is a finance major who this season was nominated by the CCHA as a candidate for the Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. Shelgren did not miss a game in his junior and senior seasons. In his junior year, he registered at least one blocked shot in 35 of 38 contests. As a Freshman at MSU, Shelgren was teammates with current Aces defenseman Brandon Gentile and former Aces defenseman Ryan Turek.

Prior to college Shelgren spent three seasons in the NAHL where he combined for 69 points (15g, 54a) and 170 penalty minutes in 155 games. He spent the 2005-2006 season with the Texarkana Bandits, before going to the St. Louis Bandits the next season. Midway through that season, he was dealt to the Fairbank Ice Dogs where he was outstanding. He finished the 2006-2007 campaign with 17 points (3g, 4a) in just 26 games for Fairbanks. In 2007-2008 he closed his junior career with another season in Fairbanks finishing as the third highest scoring defenseman on the team.

In an additional roster move the Aces placed forward Chris Langkow on 7-day IR. Langkow has missed two of the last five games, and will be eligible to return in the post-season.
