Alaska Aces News Release

The Alaska Aces limited the Idaho Steelheads to season-low 16 shots on Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough for a victory as the Steelheads won 4-3 in overtime from Sullivan Arena. Alaska extended their point streak to eight games and 20 of their last 21, but had their seven-game winning streak snapped. The Aces (46-12-7) earned a point to increase to 99 points on the season, and lowered their magic numbers for the Mountain Division to five points, and Brabham Cup to eight points. The Aces remain in Anchorage to conclude their regular season home schedule on Friday and Saturday against the Steelheads. Tickets are available at the Aces office, Sullivan Arena Box Office, Fred Meyer locations or online at www.ticketmaster.com. All Aces games can be heard on NewsTalk 103.7FM and 750AM KFQD. The Aces held the Steelheads to just three shots in the opening period, but it didn't help them on the scoreboard. Idaho scored on their first two shots of the game to take an immediate 2-0 lead. Ian Watters opened the scoring at 3:07 on a turnaround shot from the bottom of the left circle. Ben Ondrus then added to the Idaho lead at 6:40 on a breakaway goal. Alaska got on the board when Evan Trupp scored minutes into his Aces home debut. Trupp redirected a Steve Ward pass into the net for a power play goal at 9:03. Nick Mazzolini added an assist on the play to extend his season-long point streak to seven games. The Aces outshot the Steelheads 9-3, but trailed 2-1 heading into the intermission.

The Aces tied the score with the only goal of the second period. Bobby Hughes scored from behind the goal line on a shot that banked off the left arm of Idaho netminder Josh Robinson and into the net at 10:57. The Aces nearly took the lead when B.J. Crum hit the post with one second left in the frame on a shorthanded rebound of a Hughes shot on a two-on-one. Alaska outshot the Steelheads 17-4 in the second period.

Idaho regained their lead in the opening minute of the third period on a power play goal by Watters. 34 seconds into the frame Watters scored his second of the night after the puck deflected in the air and dropped just outside the crease where the Idaho forward banged it in past Gerald Coleman. The goal snapped a streak of 49 straight penalties killed by Alaska. The Aces again fought back to even the score when Mazzolini scored his fourth shorthanded goal of the season at 3:37 to make it 3-3. Mazzolini's goal was his 35th of the year, leaving him just one behind the ECHL league lead. Alaska almost took the lead when Tommy Mele rang a cross bar on a rebound just over eight minutes into the frame. Alaska earned a power play in the final two minutes, but could not score the go-ahead goal, and the game went to overtime. Early in the extra session, Idaho broke in on a two-on-one and amateur Chase Schaber scored the game-winner 34 seconds into OT to give Idaho the win. The Aces are now 1-3-1 this season against the Steelheads.

Gerald Coleman (21-4-2) made 12 saves on 16 shots in the overtime loss. Josh Robinson (24-6-4) made 30 saves on 33 shots in the win. The Aces went 1-6 on the power play and the Steelheads were 1-4. Alaska outshot Idaho 33-16 in the game.
