Alaska Aces News Release

Boise, Idaho – The Idaho Steelheads built a 4-0 advantage in the game's first 12:30, then cruised to a 6-2 decision over the Anchorage Aces in front of 5,091 Friday night at the Bank of America Centre.

Idaho jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Anchorage settled down in a wild first period. Adam Copeland snapped home a breakaway top shelf at 2:01, and when Jon Shockey blasted a slap shot past a screened Christian Soucy 42 seconds later, the Aces found themselves in a 2-0 hole. The Steelheads scored a fluke goal at 8:55 when Jeremy Mylymok's dump-in took a crazy hop off the corner boards and caromed off the back of Soucy's left skate for a 3-0 lead. Marty Flichel took a pass from Dan Shermerhorn and converted another breakaway at 12:30, and a blowout seemed imminent. Dean Larson put Anchorage on the board with a power play goal at 13:11, then struck again at even strength with only seven seconds remaining in the period to slice the deficit in half.

Idaho built its edge back to 5-2 in a penalty-filled second period. The Steelheads converted a five-on-three power play when Scott Swanson found an open Shermerhorn poised on the doorstep at 6:02. Idaho enjoyed most of the scoring chances throughout the first 40 minutes, outshooting Anchorage 29-10 over the first two periods and 41-17 for the game. Former Ace Jarret Zukiwsky accounted for the final margin by taking advantage of another Anchorage turnover and solving Soucy with a wrist shot at 3:37 of the third period.

The Aces (0-1), who have not won in Boise during the regular season since Valentine's Day, 2001, and Steelheads (1-0) finish up their series tomorrow night at the Bank of America Centre, with live radio coverage beginning at 4:45 p.m. ADT. Jack Michaels handles the play-by-play duties for all games on KFQD 750 AM.
