Bombers Promotion-Packed Weekend Begins Tonight
October 11, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
The 2002 Northern Conference Champion Dayton Bombers will begin a promotion-packed weekend of hockey at the Ervin J. Nutter Center with a 7:30 p.m. tilt tonight against the Johnstown Chiefs.
At tonight's regular season opener, the Bombers will be unveiling their 2002 Northern Conference Championship and 2002 Northwest Division title banners in a pre-game ceremony.
In addition, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Bombers' NHL affiliate which beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 in its regular season opener last night, will have a slap shot machine on the Nutter Center Flight Deck at 6:30 p.m. They will also be having 'Concrete Hockey' near the Box Office outside the Nutter Center. Also, 1,000 goalie masks will be given away courtesy of Cingular Wireless.
Tomorrow night at the Nutter Center (7:30 p.m.), the Bombers will host the Wheeling Nailers, coached by the always colorful John Brophy. At that game, 2500 Bombers Magnetic Schedules will be given away.
The East Coast Hockey League begins its 15th season tonight with 11 games, including tonight's tilt between the Dayton Bombers and the Johnstown Chiefs. The Bombers went 7-0-3 in ten regular season meetings against Johnstown in 2001-2002, then swept the Chiefs three games-to-none in the Northwest Division Final series. The Bombers and Chiefs will play a total of nine times in the 2002-2003 regular season, including five total meetings at the Nutter Center.
Nine players on the Bombers' opening day roster were with the club during its run to the Kelly Cup Finals in 2002. The list includes defensemen Jonathan Gauthier, Mike Vellinga, and Chris Wismer; and forwards Jamie Ling, Ryan Vince, Andrew Williamson, Fred Slukynsky, Chris Thompson, and Trevor Ettinger.
There are several new additions to the Bombers' opening day roster, including rookie winger Mike Renzi (2nd in OHL scoring in 2001-2002), forward David Brosseau (Macon's leading goal and point scorer last season), and second-year defenseman Mark Jerant. A crop of players has also been sent to the Bombers courtesy of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets (by way of AHL Syracuse), including defensemen Tyler Sloan and Scott Heffernan, goalie Shane Bendera, and winger Torrey DiRoberto. Trevor Ettinger was also sent to Dayton from Syracuse yesterday.
Single game tickets for the 2002-2003 Bombers' regular season are on sale now. For further ticket information, contact the Dayton Bombers at (937) 775-4747 or the Nutter Center Box Office at (937) 775-4789.
