Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Game
The Aberdeen IronBirds look for their third win in-a-row tonight as they take on the Connecticut Tigers (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Detroit Tigers). Aberdeen won its second straight game against Connecticut Tuesday night by a final score of 3-2. Ryan Berry started the game by pitching four scoreless innings. Devin Jones, who was credited with the win, came in and allowed a run on one hit in three frames. Enrico Jimenez pitched the final two innings scoreless to pick up his second save of the season. Tonight, Aberdeen will have right-hander Matt Hobgood on the bump. The former first-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles, Hobgood is looking for his first win of the season. He'll go up against New York-Penn League All-Star right-hander Brennan Smith.
Berry Good
Berry pitched a season-high four innings in last night's 3-2 win against Connecticut. The former ninth-round pick in the 2009 draft allowed just one hit and struck-out a season-high five batters. Berry, who split last season with the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds and the High-A Frederick Keys, is recovering from a shoulder injury.
Home Runs
In the past two games, the Tigers have slugged three home runs against IronBirds pitching. Aberdeen, however, has not hit a home run since before the all-star break (last homer was hit by Austin Goolsby on August 14th). As a team, the IronBirds have just 20 homers this season (tied for the third-lowest in the league). The Tigers, on the other hand, are second in the league with 41 long balls.
Palacios Goes All the Way
Tigers starting pitcher Wilsen Palacios tossed a complete game last night in a losing effort. Only one of the three runs the IronBirds scored was earned against Palacios. It's his third complete game in his last three starts. As a team, the Tigers have combined for a league-leading six complete games (three teams are tied for second in the league with one).
Playoff Picture
Although the IronBirds have been officially eliminated from post-season contention this year, they can play spoiler on this home stand. The Tigers currently trail the first-place Vermont Lake Monsters by 2.5 games in the Stedler Division. After the Tigers leave town, the first-place Staten Island Yankees come to Ripken Sadium for two games. The Yankees, who at one point had a commanding lead in the division, are 3.5 games in front of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
