Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD - Joe Velleggia's two RBI double was not enough to top the Connecticut Tigers, who beat the Aberdeen IronBirds 4-2 Wednesday evening.

The Tigers wasted little time in jumping on IronBirds' starter Matt Hobgood. Eugenio Suarez, the second batter of the game, hit a solo home run, which gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Connecticut would extend their lead in the third. Suarez led off with an infield single and then scored on Tyler Collins' RBI triple. Collins came home on a wild pitch a few pitches later. Connecticut led 3-0.

The score would remain 3-0 until the eighth inning, when the IronBirds finally got the bats going. Martin Serrata hit a two out single. Mychal Givens then walked. Velleggia then hit a two RBI double down the right field line, scoring both Serrata and Givens, making it 3-2 Tigers.

The Tigers added a run in the top of the ninth, and the final score was 4-2 in favor of Connecticut.

Matt Hobgood took the loss, falling to 0-6. He pitched five innings, allowed six hits, three runs (all earned), walking four and striking out three. Brennan Smith got the win for the Tigers, improving to 3-3.

The rubber match of this three game set will take place at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow at Ripken Stadium. Trent Howard (3-2, 3.48) will get the start for the IronBirds, while the Tigers will counter with Matt Crouse (4-1, 3.54).

The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
