Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Game

The Aberdeen IronBirds and the Auburn Doubledays (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals) meet in game two of a three-game series at Falcon Park tonight. The IronBirds are looking to even the series up at a game apiece after falling in the series opener 4-2. A tie game in the bottom of the seventh, the Doubledays scored two runs to take a lead they would never relinquish. Christian Garcia and Aaron Barrett combined for four shutout innings of reief to cement the win. Tonight, Aberdeen will have right-hander Matt Hobgood on the hill. The former first-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles is looking to bounce back after a bad start against the Williamsport Crosscutters. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Wirkin Estevez.

Velleggia's Oblique

IronBirds first baseman Joe Velleggia missed his third straight game last night due to an oblique injury. Velleggia also sat out the All-Star game at Lowell. He currently leads the team in home runs (seven), RBI (28), and slugging percentage (.463). Wynston Sawyer has been starting in Velleggia's place.

Slow Out of the Gate

The IronBirds dropped their 16h series opener last night at Auburn. Aberdeen is just 6-16 in the first game of a series. The IronBirds are an even worse 2-9 in the first game of a road-series. The IronBirds have lost three straight series openers.

Extra Base Hits

The IronBirds have mustered just three extra base hits over their past four games. Each of Aberdeen's five hits last night was a single. Two of the three extra base hits over the past four games have been home runs (Adam Davis and Austin Goolsby).

Hobgood's Comeback

Hobgood will make his seventh outing for the IronBirds tonight. Hobgood has been hit very hard in three of his six outings. In the three outings that Hobgood couldn't make it through the third he has an ERA over 30. Hobgood is working his way back from a rotator cuff strain.

Doubledays Affiliation

This is the first season the Doubledays are a Washington Nationals affiliate. The Doubledays served as an affiliate for the Toronto Blue Jays in past year. The Vermont Lake Monsters previously served as the Nationals Short-Season A affiliate.
