Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Michael Fabiaschi's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 6-6 tie and helped lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 7-6 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Scrappers scored three runs in the top of the first inning without the benefit of a base hit as Lake Monsters starter Tyler Vail walked four straight batters with one out, allowed a sacrifice fly and an unearned run on a throwing error. Vermont got a run back in the bottom of the first, then tied the game in the second on a Diomedes Lopez home run and run-scoring wild pitch.

Mahoning Valley retook the lead 5-3 in the third on a Alex Lavisky two-run double, but Bobby Crocker put the Lake Monsters on top 6-5 in the fifth with a three-run homer, his second home run of the season and just the third three-run homer of the season for Vermont. The Scrappers tied the game at six in the sixth with an unearned run on a John Barr RBI groundout.

Jordan Tripp led off the bottom of the sixth for Vermont with a double down the rightfield line and advanced to third on a Lopez sacrifice bunt. After a Jacob Tanis strikeout for the second out, Fabiaschi laced a 3-2 pitch into the rightfield gap to score Tripp with the eventual winning run.

Vermont won the game despite five Lake Monster pitchers combining for a season-high 10 walks, while Mahoning Valley pitchers did not walk a single batter. Vermont outhit the Scrappers 12-5 for the night, including three hits for Chad Oberacker and a pair of hits for Aaron Shipman and Crocker. Jordan Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs for Mahoning Valley (33-25).

Reliever Drew Bailey (4-0) allowed one unearned run on hits with two strikeouts over two innings for the win, while Jeff Urlaub worked around a leadoff double in the ninth inning for his fifth save of the season. With one out and the tying run at third, Urlaub struckout Jake Lowery and Todd Hankins to popout to Fabiaschi at second to end the game. Nate Stritz (3-4) allowed one run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings for the loss.

Vermont (29-28) remains 1 1/2 games in front of the Connecticut Tigers for first-place in the Stedler Division and will host Mahoning Valley again on Friday night in the finale of the three-game series. The first 500 adults Friday will have a chance to win a $2,500 gift certificate to Eaton's Fine Jewelery sometime during the game.
