Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS - Former big-leaguer Reggie Abercrombie is returning to patrol the outfield for the Sioux Falls Pheasants.

Pheaasants manager Steve Shirley announced on Monday the signing of the veteran outfielder, who will be active for tonight's game against Quebec. In a concurrent move, the Pheasants released outfielder Jonny Kaplan.

Aberrcombie, 31, brings 180 games experience in the major leagues with the Florida Marlins and Houston Astros to his third season in Sioux Falls. He was a centerpiece of the Pheasants' lineup in 2010-2011 and popular with Sioux Falls fans, who recently voted him to the team's 20th-Anniversary Team.

"We as an organization are excited to have a player of Reggie's caliber," Pheasants' manager Steve Shirley said. "He is high-energy and well known to our fans. He will bring an injection of energy to our club that we need."

Abercrombie initially re-signed with the Pheasants this past February, before he joined the Triple-A Pericos de Puebla of the Mexican League prior to the season. In 82 games this season, Abercrombie hit .312 with 21 home runs and 66 RBI. He stole 21 bases with a .382 on-base percentage.

Despite an injury-hampered start in 2011, Abercrombie finished the season batting .306 with 17 home runs and 66 RBI, second on the team in each of those categories. In August 2011, he hit a blistering .371 with four home runs and 24 RBI while swiping 15 bases. Abercrombie ranked second in the league with 33 stolen bases.

In two full seasons in Sioux Falls, he has batted .315 with 39 home runs and 156 RBI. He needs just five steals to become the team's career leader. In 2010, the all-star center fielder was near the top of the league in every major offensive category, including setting a new league record for runs scored (89).

From 2006 - 2008, Abercrombie played in 180 major league games with the Florida Marlins and Houston Astros. In 34 games in 2008 with Houston, he batted .309 with a .509 slugging percentage. A professional since 2000, Abercrombie has over 1,400 hits and 300 stolen bases in his career. Abercrombie was selected by the L.A. Dodgers in the 1999 draft.

Kaplan hit .325 with seven home runs and 25 RBI in 53 games this season with Sioux Falls.

The Pheasants begin a seven-game home stand with opener of a four-game series against the Quebec Capitales at 7:05 p.m. tonight at Sioux Falls Stadium.
