
Wingnuts Re-Acquire 2009 MVP

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts acquired third baseman Greg Porter from the Grand Prairie AirHogs on Monday in exchange for second baseman Jairo Perez.
Porter is currently hitting .262 with seven home runs and 33 RBI in 66 games played. Since June 7th, Porter is hitting .295 (60 for 203) with 29 runs scored, seven doubles, six home runs, and 29 RBI during a span of 48 games.
A 12-year veteran of professional baseball, Porter returns to the Wingnuts after spending the majority of the last three seasons with the AirHogs. Porter hit .372 to win the American Association batting title while playing for Wichita in 2009. The left-handed hitting slugger also tied for the league lead with 21 home runs, and ranked second with 86 RBI. Porter was named the American Association's Most Valuable Player, and was also honored by Baseball America as their Independent Player of the Year.
Porter re-joins the Wingnuts with a lifetime .309 batting average, 244 doubles, 125 home runs, and 674 RBI in 1,078 games played. Porter has more than 1,200 base hits in his career while averaging 95 runs scored, 37 doubles, 19 home runs, 102 RBI, and 51 walks per 162 contests.
The West Point, NY native has hit .298 or better in eight of his first 11 professional seasons. During his four years in the American Association, the 31-year-old Porter has a .345 composite batting average with 46 home runs, and 269 RBI in 321 games. Porter currently ranks third on the league's all-time home run list, and fourth in RBI.
Porter starred in both football and baseball at Texas A&M University before he was drafted by the Anaheim Angels in the 45th round in 2001. Porter has two years of experience at the Triple-A level and three at the Double-A level.
Porter will be in uniform tonight when the Wingnuts open a three-game road series against the Amarillo Sox.
The Wingnuts also re-acquired right-handed pitcher Josh Dew. Dew had four saves over five scoreless appearances before signing with the Mexican League's Monclova Steelers in late-May. Dew is the Wingnuts' all-time leader in saves with 24, and owns a lifetime 2.85 ERA in five professional seasons. The 27-year-old Dew had 26 strikeouts in 27.2 innings for Monclova.
Perez signed with the Wingnuts in mid-July and hit .358 with one home run and eight RBI in 13 games.
Wichita placed right-handed pitcher Dumas Garcia on the 7-Day Disabled List.
The Wingnuts open a three-game series at Amarillo tonight at 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson faces left-hander Chuck Lofgren.
