Saints Rookie Pitcher Luke Anderson Earns American Association Pitcher of the Week

ST. PAUL, MN (July 30, 2012) - Earlier this year Luke Anderson was pitching for North Dakota State. One month into his professional career he is one of the top starters on the St. Paul Saints. On Monday he was named the Pointstreak American Association Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 23-28.

The 23-year-old right-hander, out of Savage, MN, was impressive in his two starts during the week. He went a combined 2-0 with a 1.39 ERA in 13.0 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits while walking five and striking out 10. His week started on July 23 in Sioux City where he hurled 7.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two as the Saints won 14-2. Five days later he was nearly unhittable against the Quebec les Capitales. He gave up his one and only hit with two outs in the sixth inning in going 6.0 shutout innings allowing one hit while walking three and striking out a career high eight as the Saints won 6-2.

On the season Anderson is 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA in eight games (five starts). In 35.2 innings pitched he's walked 22 and struck out 22 while opponents are hitting a miniscule .213 against him. In his five starts he has gone at least 5.2 innings and hasn't allowed more than two runs and five hits in any of them.

Anderson spent three seasons with the Bison and was 8-3 with a 3.58 ERA in 15 games, all starts, including seven complete games and a shutout during his senior season this year. In 98.0 innings he walked 29, struck out 69 while opponents hit .232 against him. He etched his name in the Bison record book finishing tied for first in a single season in starts (15), tied for second in victories (8), complete games (7) and innings pitched (98.0) and sixth in strikeouts (69). He also finished ninth all-time in innings pitched (183.1) and strikeouts (143).

Anderson was a two-time Summit League Pitcher of the Week this season. The first came in February when he held this season's College World Series Champions, the Arizona Wildcats, to two runs on two hits in 7.0 innings of work in an 8-2 win. The second came when he pitched his first collegiate shutout in April at IPFW allowing five hits, striking out six and walking one in a 6-0 win. He struck out a career high 10 on April 14 at Western Illinois.

Prior to his time with the Bison he went to Dakota Technical College in Rosemount, MN where he went 7-0 with a 3.19 ERA. In 48.0 innings he fanned 50.

He is a graduate of Prior Lake High School where he was All-Conference and Team MVP during his senior season and played in the Twin Cities East-West Showdown in 2007. He also quarterbacked the varsity football team for two seasons.

This is the second Player or Pitcher of the Week honor for the Saints this season. Saints pitcher Robert Coe was named Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 2-8. The weekly honors are decided by Pointstreak, the stats company for the American Association.
