June 19, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Twin City Ballers News Release
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it has added a second Michigan team to its fast-growing roster of teams scheduled to begin play in November. To be known as the Twin City Ballers, according to owner Sidney Brooks, "We are extremely excited to be able to bring a team to Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, Michigan. We know that we can bring great professional basketball and entertainment at affordable prices to the area - and we are already moving full steam ahead."
Joe Newman, ABA CEO, added, "We originally planned for Sidney to begin in 2007. But after attending the ABA league meeting in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, he and GM Corey Sterling decided to play this season - and we are extremely happy with the decision. They are both good, knowledgeable individuals who know what it takes on and off the court to succeed. We are very confident that they will have a very strong operation and be a great credit to both the ABA and the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph communities."
Sidney Brooks grew up on the southside of Chicago and attended South Shore Community Academy. After serving in the military for three years, he has dedicated his life to youth and for the past 25 years he has held many different positions in the Chicago Public School system including President of the Local School Council and football coach. He works fulltime for the City of Chicago and owns a travel agency. His wife Stella will also be involved with the team.
Benton Harbor native Corey D. Sterling will be General Manager. Corey received his BA in Sports Management from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, has been Athletic Director of Benton Harbor Charter School for the past five years as well as Head Coach. He was All-State and Team MVP of Benton Harbor High School as well as leading rebounder, 2nd leading scorer and team co-captain at U of Wisconsin-Parkside. "I love basketball, I love my city - and the idea of having an ABA team in Benton Harbor is a dream come true. Sidney, Stella and I will do everything we can to make our area proud. And we are going to work closely with City Commissioner Glenn Yarbrough, Chairman of the Public Safety and Recreation Committee, to help our team benefit youth organizations. We are ready to go."
