Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Fargo, ND August 23, 2015- Playing in a steady 30 mph wind out of the west the Gary South Shore RailCats got off to a great start on Sunday at Fargo. The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks then turned the day into an ill wind as they ran away with a 12-3 win on Sunday dealing a crucial blow to the RailCats quest to make up ground in the American Association Wild Card race.

The two teams both were held scoreless in the first inning. The RailCats then loaded the bases with one out in the second off of starter Tyler Herron. Herron issued three straight walks bringing up Elbert Devarie. The Ball Stat product hit the first pitch through the three four hole making it 2-0 RailCats.

That lead lasted until the bottom of the inning when Fargo scored five runs off of RailCats starter Travis McGee. Joe Bonfe walked then stole second with one out. Luke Bailey then hit a slow grounder that just got beyond Alex Hernandez in the deep three four hole to score Bonfe to cut the lead to 2-1. Charlie Valerio walked to put runners at first and second. Michael Wing then drove the tying run in with a ball that hit off of RailCats Elbert Devarie's glove at third rolling into foul territory and it was 2-2.

The RedHawks got another pair of RBI from Ryan Pineda and got the final run of the inning from Chad Mozingo with a fielder's choice ground ball to second. The RailCats picked up another run in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 5-3 but they would not get any closer.

The Red Hawks left little doubt in the bottom of the third inning. Joe Dunigan reached on a single to right field off of McGee. Dunigan then stole second and came home on a single from Luke Bailey and a throwing error from RailCat shortstop Spencer Mahoney and it was 6-3. The next batter Charlie Valerio went deep to right with the strong wind to make it 8-3.

The RedHawks added a home run from Dunigan in the fifth to make it 9-3 and then closed out the scoring with three more in the sixth to extend the advantage to 12-3. Meanwhile, Fargo starter Herron (6-6) settled down and took control of the game once the RedHawks got the lead. He retired 12 straight RailCats hitters enroute to the win striking out 12 Gary batters giving up five hits. McGee (1-2) was charged with the loss giving up 12 runs 11 earned in his 5.1 of work.

The RailCats will continue the six game road trip with first place Sioux City Monday night in Iowa at 7:00pm. The X's are tied with the American Associations best record and are fighting St. Paul for the best overall record for the season. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com from Lewis and Clark Park with the pregame at 6:45pm.
